My name is Brian and I moved to Snowdonia with my wife and daughter in 2002

We live at Llechrwd Farm near Maentwrog where my daughter runs a campsite (www.llechrwd.co.uk)

In late 2007 we bought the site of a former chapel known as "Hen Gapel Maentwrog Ucha" just outside the village of Gellilydan. This contains the base walls of the former chapel & attached house and has planning permission to continue building a bungalow on these walls at 1st floor level with garages etc. below. The planning permission remains valid because work was started (even though this was subsequently abandoned) long ago.

The "Bungalow" page shows what the building would look like if we continue building within the existing planning permission.

The "As it was" page contains a drawing from an old book depicting how the building used to look. On the left there were stables below with the chapel above. Adjoining was a house and adjoining that was a Sunday school building. The upper floor went back further than the lower floor with the whole structure being built onto the slope of the ground to the left and to the rear.

I would prefer not to continue building the bungalow as I feel this would be out of keeping with the "traditional stone buildings" image of the National Park.

Instead I would like to re-create the building in the style it looked originally (but as house) using the original stone which largely remains on site to face the whole building so that it would look as close to original as possible.

The "House next door" was originally Chapel Terrace comprising 2 houses. I propose to rebuild on the chapel site in keeping with this.

I am currently clearing the site while I formulate detailed proposals to put to the planning officers who have indicated their willingness to assist me in agreeing a way forward.

Watch this space for updates as I progress, bearing in mind this will be a long term project!

CONTACT ME

My email address for this project is - postmaster@hen-gapel-maentwrog-ucha.com

I welcome supporters sending me their email addresses so I can seek their email support should I feel the need for this in progressing the project. I have already collected a lot of addresses by talking to people passing by and elsewhere but more will be appreciated. Virtually everyone I have spoken to about what I want to do has said they are in favour.

Anyone in the area is welcome to visit the site which is 200m outside the village of Gellilydan on the old road leading to Maentwrog. This road runs parallel to the A470. Postcode LL41 4ES may assist.

FINALLY

If you might be interested in supporting us financially in his project, at no direct cost, you might consider staying at our campsite rather than another or renting the house we let in Borth y Gest (details via www.llechrwd.co.uk) rather than another.

Also I am glad to recommend B & B run by friends of mine via www.accommodation-snowdonia.com or www.velog.co.uk
